ACCA Financial Management (FM) is the gateway paper to corporate finance. It tests your ability to make and evaluate financial decisions — investment appraisal, working capital management, financing choices, and risk management. Passing FM opens the door to some of the most well-paid finance roles in Kenya and beyond. At Upskill Ltd, FM is taught by Mr. Javan Wasike with precision and a focus on the calculation accuracy that determines results in this paper.
Global Pass Rate: ~48–50% (Dec 2025 to Mar 2026)
What Is ACCA FM About?
FM is a heavily numerical paper. Unlike PM, which mixes calculation and analysis, FM demands that you are consistently accurate with a wide range of financial calculations — from NPV and IRR to WACC, bond valuations, and foreign exchange risk management. The written elements require concise, structured commentary rather than lengthy essays.
Exam Format
- Section A: 15 objective test questions — 2 marks each (30 marks)
- Section B: 3 case-based questions with 5 sub-parts — 30 marks
- Section C: 2 constructed response questions — 20 marks each (40 marks)
Section C typically includes one investment appraisal question and one covering business finance or working capital management.
Key Syllabus Areas
- A — Financial Management Function: Role of the financial manager, agency theory, financial objectives, stakeholders
- B — Financial Management Environment: Economic environment, financial markets and institutions, interest rates, money markets
- C — Working Capital Management: Cash operating cycle, receivables management, payables management, inventory management, cash management (Baumol and Miller-Orr models)
- D — Investment Appraisal: NPV, IRR, MIRR, payback, ARR, taxation in investment appraisal, inflation (real vs nominal), lease vs buy, capital rationing
- E — Business Finance: Sources of finance (equity, debt, convertibles, warrants), WACC, Modigliani-Miller, dividend policy, capital structure
- F — Cost of Capital: Cost of equity (CAPM, DGM), cost of debt, WACC, gearing
- G — Business Valuations: Asset-based, earnings-based (P/E, earnings yield), dividend-based (DVM), cash flow-based valuations

Most Tested Topics
What the examiner favours: NPV with taxation and inflation, WACC calculation, foreign exchange hedging (all four methods — money market hedge, forward contracts, futures, options), working capital ratios and management, business valuations, and dividend policy. NPV appears in almost every sitting.
5 Critical FM Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing nominal and real discount rates. Use the Fisher formula: (1 + nominal) = (1 + real) × (1 + inflation). Discounting real cash flows with a nominal rate — or vice versa — produces a completely wrong NPV. This error is very common and very costly.
- Tax timing errors in investment appraisal. Most FM questions assume tax is paid one year in arrears. If the question states tax is paid in the same year, that changes every cash flow. Read the question carefully before building your NPV table.
- Getting the WACC formula wrong. WACC = (E/V × Ke) + (D/V × Kd × (1-t)). Remember to use market values of equity and debt (not book values), and to tax-adjust the cost of debt.
- Attempting all hedging techniques equally when only one is asked for. If the question asks you to evaluate two hedging methods, calculate both completely and then recommend one with a clear reason. Do not rush — marks are awarded at each stage of the calculation.
- Writing narrative without numbers. FM Section C written parts require short, precise commentary linked to specific figures in your calculation. Write in bullet points or short sentences. Long paragraphs are not rewarded.
Study Strategy for FM
- Build a calculation toolkit: For each major topic area, practise the calculation sequence until it is automatic. Investment appraisal, WACC, and FX hedging are the three most important.
- Use a financial calculator efficiently: FM allows a financial calculator in the exam. Practise using it to compute NPV, IRR, and bond prices. Speed and accuracy here saves time for Section C written commentary.
- Work through past papers from week five: FM past papers reveal the examiner's preferences clearly. Timed attempts are essential — FM Section C questions must be completed in 36 minutes each.
- Know when to move on: If a calculation is not working under exam pressure, show your method, state your assumption, and continue. Partial marks are available throughout FM.
