One of the most important — and most frequently misunderstood — aspects of the ACCA qualification is exemptions. If you hold a relevant degree or have completed some CPA Kenya papers, you may be able to skip certain ACCA papers entirely. This can save you months and significant exam fees. This guide explains how ACCA exemptions work for students in Kenya and how to apply.
ACCA exemptions allow students who hold recognised prior qualifications to skip certain ACCA papers. ACCA grants these because it recognises that your prior studies have already covered the syllabus content of those papers. Exemptions are available for Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers only. No exemptions are available for Strategic Professional papers — every ACCA student must pass SBL, SBR, and their two chosen optional papers.
The maximum number of exemptions ACCA can grant is nine. In practice, most Kenyan graduates with accounting degrees receive between three and six exemptions.
Kenyan graduates with bachelor's degrees in accounting, finance, or related disciplines from accredited universities are typically eligible for exemptions from Applied Knowledge papers and some Applied Skills papers. The specific exemptions depend on the university attended, the modules covered in your degree, and ACCA's accreditation agreement with your institution. ACCA maintains a database of recognised qualifications at accaglobal.com, or contact Upskill Ltd and we will look it up for you.
If you have completed CPA Kenya papers, you are likely eligible for exemptions:
In most cases, yes. However, if your prior studies in a subject were weak and you know you would benefit from the ACCA tuition for that paper, it may be worth sitting it rather than skipping it. This is especially relevant for PM and FM, which are foundational for later Strategic Professional papers. At Upskill Ltd, we advise students on a case-by-case basis.
Not sure which exemptions you qualify for? Bring your transcripts and we will assess your exemptions at no cost during your enrolment consultation.
